Collection: HB Originals Collection

We have been studying some circa-1910-1915 images recently and have noticed what appears to be a consistency in this "HB" logo that connects it to suits that would have been rented at the Saltwater Plunge - here are two examples. Could this be the very first "HB" logo that the city had seen? From a design standpoint, it's wonderful - simple, clever, and very brandable.

You'll note the two kids are next to a wooden pier so we know it's pre-1914 - 1906 to be exact - and check on that slide at left in the other shot - the Saltwater Plunge really looked like a cool place. Whoever designed this classic HB logo, we are indebted and proud to reproduce it today.

It was chosen back in 1968 as part of a municipal contest from more than 200 entries - 23-year-old La Canada resident John Casado won $500 for his winning entry, and he would not stop there.

Over the years, Casado would design album covers for Bob Dylan, the Doobie Brothers, Carole King, Neil Young, and many more - he designed the Allman Brothers "Eat a Peach" cover! He also designed the first branding trademark for the first Macintosh computer and many other iconic logos.

Today he is an acclaimed photographer and designer whose work still attracts plenty of attention - but it started for him here in HB with his first proven piece of work - our famous "Quad" logo. (That's John at right receiving his award from former Mayor, Don Shipley.)
